Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program

Bicyclists in unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County were involved in 815 traffic collisions between 2019 and 2022 resulting in 12 deaths and 121 severe injuries. During the same time, there were 1,333 pedestrian-involved traffic collisions that led to 153 deaths and 301 severe injuries.

Low-income communities of color experience high numbers of pedestrian and bicyclist related deaths and severe injuries due to unsafe roads and a lack of sidewalks, bike lanes, and lighting. To help reduce the number of bicyclists and pedestrians involved in collisions, PLACE launched the Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education Program—a California Office of Traffic Safety funded program focused in historically underserved communities that provides free English and Spanish hands-on safety classes, know your rights training, community presentations, and helmets and bike lights to residents in unincorporated East Los Angeles, Florence Firestone, Willowbrook/West Rancho Dominguez, and Westmont/West Athens. Classes and activities cover topics such as biking, walking, scooter safety, and on-bike handling skills. In addition to safety education, we also provide opportunities to join community walks and bike rides.

Programming will be back later this year. Come back soon to see what’s happening!
