Overview
The Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology is comprised of the following units:
Data Collection and Analysis (DC&A)
This unit is responsible for three State-mandated
subunits: 1) Vital Records Office (births and deaths);
2) Medical Marijuana Identification Program (MMIP); and
3) Morbidity Unit (communicable disease reporting).
DC&A ensures the timely collection of data and prepares data for analysis by County department and other
non-county agencies.

Epidemiology Unit
This unit provides epidemiologic support, training, and
other assistance to public health programs, community
partners, and other organizations that do not have this
capacity. It also coordinates Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) support, training, and resources for the
department.
Community Health Assessment Unit
This unit conducts the Los Angeles County Health Survey (LACHS), a large population-based survey that provides information concerning the health of Los Angeles County residents.
Institutional Review Board (IRB)
The IRB reviews and monitors all DPH-related research and evaluation projects involving collection or analysis of data from or about human subjects. The IRB provides training, consultation and policy direction for DPH on the ethics and integrity of research and other data collection.
