About Health Care Consumer Protection

The Health Care Consumer Protection Unit is housed in the Division of Medical and Dental Affairs in the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The unit leads the Department’s consumer education efforts aimed at empowering consumers about health-related products and services that are potentially unsafe or marketed in ways that are misleading or fraudulent. We also work to make the health care landscape safer through education, policy, and system changes by partnering with agencies and health care providers to reduce harmful, ineffective, or unnecessary medical services. Our partners include: LA County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, local branches of the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Reports, as well as the Department’s Office of Women’s Health.
