About the Acute Care Hospital Outbreak Team
The Acute Care Hospital Outbreak team is responsible for conducting comprehensive and timely investigation of an outbreak or an unusual occurrence (situation event) in a General Acute Care Hospital (GACH), Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH), and Distinct Part (DP) Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) in Los Angeles County (LAC).
Key Functions
The Acute Care Hospital Outbreak Team:
- Determines if the outbreak is a cluster of infections or colonizations related in time and place or occurring above a baseline or threshold level for a defined area of a facility, including the entire facility, specific unit, or ward. Baseline is relative to what is normally observed in a particular setting
- Determines a situation event as a cluster of infections or colonizations that may not clearly meet all outbreak criteria defined above or that requires additional information to determine if an outbreak has occurred
- Conducts investigations in acute care hospital settings (including LTACHs and Distinct Part (DP) SNFs), often in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
